BREAKING: Gen. Joshua Dongonyaro Dies @ 80

The former Field Commander of the Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group (ECOMOG), Lt. Gen. Joshua Nimyel Dogonyaro has died at 80.

Family sources revealed to CLASSIC INTERNATIONAL that he died in Jos this Thursday morning from an undisclosed ailment.

Apart from his ECOMOG assignment, Dongoyaro will be remembered as having read the coup speech that announced the overthrowing of General Muhammadu Buhari and the ushering in of General Ibrahim Babangida on August 27, 1985.

He was said to have been ill for some time.

Born on September 12, 1940, the military tactician attended Boys’ Secondary School, Gindiri, Jos.

Dongonyaro, who rose through the ranks and became a renowned military tactician as well as a member of the “Langtang Mafia” that dominated the Army during the General Ibrahim Babangida regime, enlisted in the Nigerian Army as a student of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Kaduna, in 1964.

Commissioned Second-Lieutenant in the Nigerian Army Armoured Corps in 1967, he proceeded to the Nigerian Army School of Infantry, Jaji, and attended the Armour Officers Course in the USA.

He was an alumnus of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, Jos.

Dogoyaro served in several capacities before his retirement from the military in 1993.

He was Officer Commanding, 1 Recce Squadron, NA, 1967-69; Quartermaster General, I Infantry Division (Main), N, 1969-70; Chief Instructor and Adjutant, Recce Training School, NA, 1970-72; Commanding Officer, I Recce Regiment, NA., 1972-76; Principal Staff Officer, Headquarters, Nigerian Army Armoured Corps, 1976-77; Commanding Officer, 24 Armoured Brigade, NA, 1977-79; Task Force Commanding Officer, 203 Armoured Battalion on the Peace-Keeping Force in Chad; Director of Manning (Army), Army Headquarters, ‘A’ Branch, NA, 1984-85, and Director of Armoury, 1985; General Officer Commanding 3 Armoured Division, NA, Jos, 1985-87; Armed Forces Ruling Council (AFRC), 1985; General Officer Commanding 2nd Mechanised Division, NA, Ibadan, 1987.
